Not another acronym! That's what I thought when I saw this the first time--Joe Brown BSN PCCN. Yeah, yeah, so what, we all get paid the same, or maybe just a few cents difference. What matters is your experience, Joe B!
Well, that's how I think until recently. We, nurses, will now get differential, $2,000/year for each: PCCN, CCRN, BSN, and MSN in St. John. It may be sad, but dollars motivate me a great deal. I will start working on my PCCN today!
PCCN what?
PCCN stands for Progressive Care Certified Nurse. To obtain this specialty certification you have to pass the exam by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. The exam covers contents as broken down in the list below. As you can see, the bulk falls on the cardiovascular system, making this certification appearing to be more geared to telemetry nurses particularly those who care for, mostly, acutely-illed-adult cardiovascular patients.
- cardiovascular (37%)
- pulmonary (13%)
- endocrine (4%)
- hematology/immunology (5%)
- neurology (4%)
- gastrointestinal (5%)
- renal (6%)
- multisystem (6%)
- advocacy/moral agency (2%)
- caring practices (4%)
- collaboration (4%)
- systems thinking (2%)
- response to diversity clinical inquiry (2%)
- facilitation of learning (2%)
Later, I will post more about my review--what resources I use, what I find useful, etc.

I took the CCRN exam last year... and it was no walk in the park.
If it's going to advance your knowledge and hell increase your pay, there can't be a draw back to that?
Go for it.
@Strong One, yes, I've heard. These certification exams are difficult. I need to prepare for it.
the more letters you add to your name, the thicker your wallet. if you get stressed out preparing for it, i guess when you get your paycheck it will be worth it, right?
@May: Absolutely! I just need to pass it first.
I'm studying for the PCCN exam myself; read all about the fun at my own blog, The Call Light: http://heresyourcalllight.blogger.com
